Ice Cave Planning Calendar: The 2026 Cycle

Ice caves are living formations that change every single week. Depending on which month you choose, your experience will differ in terms of cave stability, light quality, and crowd sizes. Here is what to expect month-by-month.

September - October

Status: Pre-Season ⚠️

Operators are scouting new caves. Natural blue caves are usually still flooded or too thin. Katla is your only reliable option.

November

Status: Early Season ✅

The first natural blue caves open. The ice is fresh and "un-scuffed" by hundreds of boots. Bonus: Northern Lights begin to appear.

December - January

Status: Peak Season (Best Light) ⭐

The coldest months provide the most stable caves. The "Blue Hour" light lasts for several hours, making the ice look magical. High chance of Northern Lights.

February

Status: Mid-Season ✅

Caves are at their largest. The winter sun stays low, creating beautiful golden light at cave entrances.

March

Status: Late Season ⚠️

The final month for natural blue caves. As temperatures rise, caves can fill with water. Check safety reports daily.

April - August

Status: Summer Season (Closed) ❌

Natural blue caves are closed. Time to pivot to **Glacier Hiking** or the **Katla Ice Cave** near Vík.

The "Golden Window" for 2026

If you want the absolute best experience for both ice caves and northern lights, we recommend booking between **January 15th and February 15th**. You'll have maximum cave stability and enough darkness for aurora hunting, while avoiding the darkest days of late December.
